[ACCI-CAVIE] Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group have joined forces to launch the Horizon Fiber Initiative, a transformative project aimed at enhancing digital connectivity across Africa. This strategic partnership will establish a Multi-Terabit terrestrial fiber optic link, facilitating seamless communication from the Horn of Africa to Europe and Asia.
In development since June 2024, the Horizon Fiber Initiative involves a comprehensive feasibility study and technical planning conducted by a joint team from the three telecom operators. The partners anticipate finalizing the contract by January 2025, with services set to commence in April 2025. This initiative promises to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity, significantly improving data transmission capabilities and reducing latency throughout the region.
As Africa strives to strengthen its position in the global digital economy, the Horizon Fiber Initiative represents a crucial step toward enhanced international connectivity. By bridging the continent with major global markets, the project aims to empower businesses and communities through improved technological infrastructure.
Mohamed Assoweh Bouh, Director General of Djibouti Telecom, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “This initiative marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance digital connectivity and regional integration. It showcases our commitment to collaboration, innovation, and exceptional connectivity solutions.”
The African Center for Monitoring and Economic Intelligence (CAVIE) is closely monitoring these developments, providing valuable insights that organizations can utilize to navigate the evolving telecommunications landscape in Africa. As the Horizon Fiber Initiative progresses, CAVIE’s expertise will be essential for stakeholders looking to capitalize on the opportunities presented by this groundbreaking project.
